Nafion Tubing
Tubing Information
This semi-permeable membrane tube with braided shield replaces drying columns in gas analyzers and metabolic carts. Removes water vapor from expired breath samples before they reach gas analyzers. Prevents condensation in sample lines and analyzer cells.
Approx. 18 inches (45 cm) long x 0.04 inches (1 mm) inner diameter x 1/16″ (1.5 – 2 mm) outer diameter tapered hose barbs. To install, just cut the sampling line of your gas analyzer and insert Nafion tube. Works bi-directionally, meaning it also humidifies any dry calibration gas. Note: Alter STPD correction to reflect the presence of ambient humidity, not dry gases.
Unbraided Nafion Tube
Available on special order. No. 17048-XS is raw Nafion (unbraided/No connectors). Sold by the meter.
Key Features and Properties:
- Selective Moisture Removal: Removes only water vapor by absorbing it on one side and releasing it on the other based on a pressure gradient.
- Chemical Resistance: Highly resistant to chemical attack and corrosion, similar to Teflon™.
- Self-Regenerating: Does not require specialized desiccant changes, reducing maintenance.
- Thermal Range: Operates effectively at high temperatures, up to 120OC. Recommended range for optimal moisture exchange: 10°C to 60°C (50°F to 140°F)
- Versatility: Available in different diameters and lengths to match sampling needs.
- Common Applications:
- Gas Sample Drying: Removes moisture from gas samples (e.g., in analyzers) to prevent sensor damage and ensure accurate measurements.
- Medical Gas Analysis: Ideal for capnography, ETCO2 measurement, and pulmonary function testing to maintain dry, accurate sampling lines.
- Fuel Cells & Electrolyzers: Used as an ion-exchange membrane in PEM fuel cells.
- Humidity Control: Maintains consistent humidity for sensors and analytical equipment.
- Usage Guidelines:
- Avoid filling the tubing with liquid water, which can impair its water-removal ability, although drying it out can typically restore function.
- Replace periodically (e.g., every 12 months) in high-demand, continuous, or medical settings to maintain efficiency.
